Tijuana receives patients from all over the United States for dental work, plastic surgery, bariatric procedures, regenerative therapy and specialist consultations. The treatment itself is the part that is usually well organised: the clinic has a date, a price and a protocol.
Everything around it is what patients arrive without a plan for. Where to sleep the night before. How to get to a clinic in a city they do not know. What happens the afternoon they are discharged. How long the border takes on the way home, and who is driving. This guide covers that half of the trip.
Where to stay
The first decision after the surgery date is the address you will recover at, and the three options are not interchangeable. A hotel gives you privacy and room service; a rental gives you space and a kitchen; a recovery house gives you supervision. Which one fits depends on your procedure — and that is a question for your surgeon before it is a question of budget.
How to get around
A medical week is not one ride, it is eight or nine: the airport, the crossing, the clinic, the recovery house, the follow-ups, the pharmacy and the trip home. Every fare we charge is published before you book, and covers the patient plus one companion.
Where treatment takes place
Most of Tijuana's medical tourism happens in a handful of districts. Zona Río concentrates surgical centres, specialist towers, laboratories and imaging; Chapultepec and Agua Caliente hold several private hospitals; Otay is close to the airport and to many recovery houses.
Knowing which district your clinic is in tells you more about your week than the clinic's street address does.
Crossing the border
Southbound into Tijuana is minutes. Northbound is the direction that costs hours, and it is the one a patient takes right after a procedure. Our published fares include one hour of border wait; the medical lane pass is what turns the bad afternoons into a fraction of that.
After your procedure
The days after surgery are the ones patients plan least and remember most. Follow-up visits, drain or splint removal, a pharmacy run, and finally the crossing home — usually while you are at your least mobile.
A recovery house is accommodation, not medical care, and none of this replaces the post-operative plan your surgeon gives you.
